About the Seton Lake Lookout

  • Length: 0.9km

  • Traffic: Low

  • Route Type: Out & Back

On your drive into the town of Lillooet, the Seton Lake Lookout is a quick stop offering a rewarding hiking experience that unveils breathtaking vistas of the surrounding landscape. If you've been following The Markus Project, you'll know that we're all about those short hikes with a rewarding ending. Well, this 10-15 minute hike was short, but it was certainly not easy! The trail was a fast climb up to a lookout point, providing a panoramic view of the hairpin turn on the road, the glistening Seton Lake and the majestic mountains that stretch into the distance.

Markus on the trail that is not very well marked, but clear enough

If you're driving into Lillooet, the pulloff is on your left. Don't expect too much though - it is a gravel path off the side of the road that's wide enough for cars to park. We overshot the pulloff before we realized we went too far and had to turn back. Once parked, the trailhead is on the other side of the road. We don't recall it being marked, but you will see an opening and as you emerge on the other side, you'll see a distinct trail towards your left. Be extremely careful as you cross the road as cars can be driving rather fast.

The trail to the Seton Lake Lookout may be short, but don't underestimate its steepness. As you ascend, the incline gradually becomes more pronounced, requiring a steady pace and cautious steps. Take your time and take breaks. Allow yourself to anticipate what's coming up.

Upon reaching the top, you'll be rewarded with an awe-inspiring vista that will leave you breathless, although that may just be from the climb! The viewpoint showcases the mesmerizing hairpin turn on the road below, gracefully snaking its way alongside the serene Seton Lake. The tranquil waters mirror the surrounding mountains, creating a picture-perfect scene that seems straight out of a postcard. Take a moment to soak in the beauty, snap some photos, and let the tranquility of the setting wash over you. The lookout at the top is wide with plenty of areas to stretch out and enjoy the view.

As you head back down, it's important to exercise caution when descending from the lookout, particularly if you have a dog with you. The steep descent can be challenging, especially if your dog tends to pull you forward. Maintain a firm grip on the leash and take deliberate steps to ensure your safety.

The trail gets steep and rocky towards the top of the Seton Lake Lookout

Another important note is that we found this area to be relatively warmer than where we came from and Lillooet. Since there's a climb, it's important to bring plenty of water to stay hydrated even though the hike is short - both for you and for your dog.

Our Recommendation for Reactive Dogs

We absolutely loved doing this hike with our dog and it was a bonus that the trail was fairly empty while we were there. There might have only been 2 or 3 other groups of hikers and only one other dog that was leashed. The top of the lookout has enough room so we never felt in too close proximity with other hikers or dogs, but it also has cliffs, so it can be dangerous to off-leash dogs. Even if you're comfortable with your dog being off-leash during the hike, we highly recommend keeping them leashed at the top for their safety.

What we liked about the trail

  • The view of Seton Lake and the hairpin at the top of the lookout is majestic

  • For reactive dogs, this trail was fairly quiet

What we didn't like about the trail

  • Nothing, we loved this trail. Just be careful when descending, especially if your dog tends to pull forward, as the steepness of the trail could cause you to lose your footing.

The marker on the map above indicates where the parking lot is. The trailhead is on the other side of the street from the parking lot.
